twitter.pngDen Überblick zu behalten, bei den ganzen täglich neu erscheinenden Erweiterungen und neuen Ideen zur Nutzung von Twitter, das ist nicht ganz leicht. Eine Webseite hat sich jetzt dieser Aufgabe verschrieben: twitdom.com

Den Grund also für diese Übersichtsseite gibt der Seitenbetreiber gleich selbst:

Wie wäre es z.B. mal mit:

  • twitbacks, um das eigene Weblog mit den tweets zu verbinden, die auf Blogeinträge verweisen; am besten in Kombination mit dem WP-Plugin „Tweet This“ (danke @assbach) anwendbar; Nachtrag: Ich meinte natürlich tweetbacks (ebenfalls als WP-Plugin; Übersicht über alle tweetback-plugins), wobei twitter-Background-Images auch wichtig sind, finde ich.
  • tweetwasters, um z.B. auszurechnen, wieviel zeit man in twitter schon verbracht hat, oder
  • twitterbuttons, um webgerecht auf den eigenen twitter-account aufmerksam zu machen?
  • twitid, um auch twitter-accounts von kommentierenden Lesern anzeigen zu können (falls diese es wünschen). (Danke an Ortwin für den Tipp)

Ich selbst nutze häufiger twitpic zum schnellen Verlinken von Bildern auf die ich mich in einem tweet beziehe. Dann nutze ich gerne auch mal blip.fm, um anderen schnell und einfach zu zeigen, was für ein Musikstück ich meine. Hin und wieder nutze ich auch mal xefer für mehr Infos über andere twitterer und deren Gewohnheiten (siehe folgende Grafik).

Am nützlichsten ist jedoch immer noch die twitter-Suche,um einmal gesehene tweets die an einem vorbeirauschten wiederzufinden.

Update 18.1.2009
Ich hab es jetzt auch endlich geschafft meine WP-Installation auf Version 2.7 zu aktualisieren. Es hilft doch ungemein, wenn man SSH-Zugriff auf den Server hat, ohne ist eine WordPress Installation quasi zum technologischen Stillstand verurteilt (keine neuen Plugins, keine angemessenen Datenbankbackups, keine größeren Theme-Anpassungen und auch keine Podcasts möglich!). Hier ein Überblick über die Plugins, die ich neu aktiviert habe:

  • Tweetback, das bereits erste Treffer bzw. Tweetbacks geliefert hat. Wunderbare Sache, denn es hilft das Blog weiter als Trailblazing-Instrument zu nutzen und Verbindungen zu schaffen wo vorher keine waren.
  • Tweet-this, ist eigentlich recht primitiv aufgebaut, das es nur einen Parameter über einen twitter-link übergibt. Normalerweise soll es auch den Link zu dem Post gleich mitliefern, das tut es bei mir noch nicht, warum weiß ich derzeit nicht.
  • WP-Cumulus, erzeigt derzeit eine kleine animierte Flashwolke von Tags bzw. meinen Kategorien rechts in der Sidebar. Ich probiere es mal aus… mal sehen wie lange ich das Geflacker am Rand mitmache.
  • WPTouch, ein Plugin, dass das Blog für iPhone und iPod Touch optimiert in der Darstellung. Ich hab es gleich selbst ausprobiert indem ich im Development-Menü des Safari den User-Agent mal auf iPhone gestellt hab. Und natürlich hab ich gleich mal in Custom-Icon designed dafür.
  • Easy Admin Color Themes, hat mich etwas enttäuscht. Ich fand die neue Farbgebung von WP2.7 etwas blass und wollte mehr Kontrast. Das Plugin funktioniert zwar, aber es gibt kein besseres Colorscheme für die Admin-Oberfläche darin… muss ich wohl selbst nochmal ran.
  • Spam Karma 2, funktioniert immer noch, obwohl seit Ewigkeiten kein Update mehr rauskam. Ich lasse es aktiviert solange es seinen Job tut.
  • WP Ajax Edit Comments, wollte ich seit langem haben. Es erlaubt auch eine gewisse Zeit nach dem Absenden eines Kommentars für Kommentatoren die Bearbeitung ihres Kommentars, wenn man z.B. sieht, dass noch ein Tippfehle oder ein Linkfehler drin ist. Deutlich mehr Komfort für meine Leser! :-D
  • …demnächst muss ich dann mal probieren meine Sidebar in meinem ziemlich eigenen Theme zu „widgetiz’en“ und die Tag-Anzeige bei Beiträgen irgendwie nachzurüsten in das Theme…

Why do I blog this? twitter wird immer populärer und mittlerweile springen mehr und mehr Leute auf, die nicht zu den Early-Adopters zählen. Selbst klassische Medien wie z.B. „Die Welt“, „Der Spiegel“ usw. engagieren sich. Da kann eine kleine Orientierung ja nicht schaden. :-D

LIFT09: How getting close, doubles your activity

In February 2009 I will give a first time visit to the LIFT-Conference 2009 in Geneva/Switzerland. I closely followed the latest conferences and always wanted to visit one by my self. Now I have the money which allows me to afford visiting this hopefully inspiring event in the upcoming year. I registered in mid of November as an early bird.

I think that it is a very good idea to give guests of LIFT09 the choice to perhaps be part of a workshop around new ways of non-verbal communication on the WWW: Virtual Proxemics. So I setup a workshop offer for people who plan to visit LIFT09 and I would like to invite you all to have a look at the description of my workshop offer.

In the workshop I will ask „Are we all condemned to loneliness on the WWW?“ and at the same time I would like to offer some insight that „Providing context to feel closer to each other“ might be an improvement. „Discussing possible fields of application for virtual proxemics“ will be the creative and thought provoking part of this workshop with a goal to kick off a Proxemic Information Think Tank (PITT).

Whats up with weblin.com and all its competitors?

Since I moved to munich, I started again travelling the pages which deal with the problem of „making people visible on websites“. So I just took all the known URL’s and tried to revisit them to check out what innovation did to them in the last year. And I was surprised… that nearly nothing has happened. Especially the startup-company weblin.com which even got an award last year and 500K€-funding did not move much. (See on the right how Weblin looks like at the moment)

Weblin still needs some special software which needs to be installed on your system and if this system is not a windows system you could only use the weblin-light solution, which tries to put other websites in a frame to put itself around that site (which many site-admins do not want to happen) and which renders weblin often unusable on websites like e.g. newsmagazines.

Overall I (re-)visited the following solutions:

  • weblin.com which puts animated avatars at the bottom of a website
  • itzle.com which das the same, but doesn’t need extra software
  • eyebees.com which needs a manual installation on a website
  • firef.ly which is completely new to me an therefore i tried it…
  • rocketon.com which is completely new to me an therefore i applied for early alpha testing…
  • me.dium.com that was also unknown to me before and works as a firefox-plugin (just trying this out at the moment)
  • Quek.nl which I totally forgot to check again. Revisited everything the same.

firefly_logo.pngTrying out firefly – which by the way has an url which is not easy to remember – was not really a very pleasant experience. It puts a complete flash-layer above a page when you start it and the huge layer is not really my favourite color. Since huge flash-layovers are really not performing and making the browser pretty slow, using up all processing-power, it was no appealing solution to me. Besides that you cannot continue to surf the web if you want to use it.

whatadminpassword.pngBut… and this but is a real one, the integration of firefly is perfect. They offer several different ways to integrate this in your site, blog or shop. The offer a bar, a button, a switch, and so on. I just integrated the button on the right and the bar at the bottom to test it. Please try it! I will also closely follow the firefly-blog. They’ve done a great job of integration, but still many rough edges. But where do I get my admin-password? This seems to protec the advanced options at the moment, and I do not know where to register or even get a clou about the admin-functions.

I removed the bar at the bottom. It just interfered to much. I will leave the switch on the right. BTW: About weblin I found a nice article on netzwelt.de. Also a nice one with the title „The Avatars Take Over the Asylum – Layered Social Virtual Worlds“ (Source blog.wolfspelz.de)

I just tested rocketon.com and well, this looks like YWCLW (yet another web chat like weblin and some trading system like in second life). You can configure an avatar with clothing and gimmicks and then you can start buying stuff for… yeah for what exactly? I think for entertainment. You can put gimmicks on websites, e.g. start a firework, or place a door (some kind a link) somewhere. I visited my blog with rocketon activated and it looked like this:

moneyisthewaytogo.pngAs soon as you want to become more social… right you need money. See the screenshot on the right. But this is also valid for weblin. It seems as if rocketon starts copying SecondLife in regard to the money & trading system implemented to exchange stuff. But compered with the original weblin client it is much worse, because there is no real web-surfing possible if you are in „rocket-mode“. It is just some kind’a overlay which renders the website useless except as a playground for rocketeers.

Best thing about it is that a firefoxplugin does all the work. no further installations necessary AFAIK. But again it is boring to run around with avatars. If I want to do that I can check out SecondLife or the even newer and better clone of it: LivePlace.com which sports TV-quality rendering thanks to the OTOY-technology. Nice try by the ambitious rocket-engineers over there at rocketon.com, but not yet the holy grail.

Why do I blog this? Though I found a new solution (firefly, rocketon) it leaves me still pretty disappointed, because there must be another, much better way to increase presence/visibility of people on the web which is not that intrusive to the site. Much space for new ideas… unit I get a better idea I continue browsing the blog of Heiner Wolf and his Newssite about Virtual Presence on the net.
