On 13th and 14th of June 2006 the Where 2.0 Conference took place in California/USA. The Where 2.0 Conference brings together the people, projects, and issues leading the charge into the location based technological frontier. (Found via Tim O’Reilly)
Some really interesting presentations where held. The most interesting Session for me is „It’s Place, Not Space“ because that’s exactly what I think is valid for my concept of virtual proxemics in my doctorate thesis. Nikolaj Nyholm and Claus Dahl from (Prox)Imity therefore state:
Location is not about geography. The most important thing isn’t the space you’re in — the coordinates — but the place you’re in — the people, ideas, and interactions between them.
Yes, yes, yes! That is exactly how I see it, too.
The next Conference will be in June 19-20, 2007. Perhaps i can make it there and show some interesting results of my research.
Why do I blog this? „Proximity“ is the key for Social Computing and „location-based services“ is the keyword for all mobile Appliances like Cellphones and PDA’s, but if you think about visiting a website this is also a location or a place. So it is also a location-based service, because you need to „go“ there to get the service. There is some new approach needed to make people aware of each other in all the places of the internet. Virtual proxemics are my idea to do that. It’s about place not space and about the proximity of humans to each other!
